ABOUT EAR CHECK
A moment for the little details
Earphone Check is a free sound-checking tool by Heatwave, made for everyday listeners. Explore your earbuds and headphones without downloads, accounts or technical jargon.
What is Earphone Check?
One headphone illustration controls every sound. Choose a sine wave, square wave, white noise, pink noise or one of six licensed music recordings. Use the earcups for left and right, the center for Mono / Mid, and either outer edge for Side. Stereo restores the original two channels. Auto pan moves the sound from left to right and back. No login is required.
How to use it
- Connect your headphones and lower your device’s media volume.
- Choose a sound. Source buttons start playback in stereo.
- Tap the left or right earcup to isolate that channel, the center for Mono, or an outer edge for Side.
- Tap the same active control again to pause. Tap again, or press Resume, to continue at the saved position.
- Switch listening channels without restarting the recording. Use the restart arrow to begin again.
Signals stop after 15 seconds and music after up to 30 seconds. The tone frequency presets cover bass and treble. Pause whenever you need a break.
Where do the sounds come from?
Test signals are synthesized in your browser with Web Audio. Sine and square tones have identical channels, so their Side component is silent. White and pink noise use independent channels. Pink noise uses an approximate pink-style spectrum; it is not a calibrated reference. The music library uses six licensed recordings by Kevin MacLeod, with the piano composition credited to Erik Satie. The locally hosted excerpts have static level adjustments and short fades. The original clips have no added EQ or stereo effects; the selected listening mode is applied live during playback. See the music credits for each source, license and edit. Earphone Check does not access your microphone or record audio.
What these checks cannot tell you
Earphone Check does not measure actual sound pressure, precise frequency response, distortion levels or hearing ability. A volume percentage is not an acoustic measurement. Device settings, browsers, wireless connections, background noise and fit all influence what you hear.
